چکیده

INTRODUCTION Orthopaedic fracture fixation plates are applied using metal bone screws. Surgeons do this manually by “feel” without monitoring the torque applied. Few studies have measured the stripping torque of bone screws in human bone [1-3]. No studies have measured stripping torque in the synthetic bones increasingly being used in biomechanical studies. The present aim was to measure stripping torque of cortical screws in human vs. synthetic cortical bone.

Cancellous Screws Are Biomechanically Superior to Cortical Screws in Metaphyseal Bone.

Cancellous screws are designed to optimize fixation in metaphyseal bone environments; however, certain clinical situations may require the substitution of cortical screws for use in cancellous bone, such as anatomic constraints, fragment size, or available instrumentation. This study compares the biomechanical properties of commercially available cortical and cancellous screw designs in a synth...

Influence of Screw Length and Bone Thickness on the Stability of Temporary Implants

The purpose of this work was to study the influence of screw length and bone thickness on the stability of temporary implants. A total of 96 self-drilling temporary screws with two different lengths were inserted into polyurethane blocks (n = 66), bovine femurs (n = 18) and rabbit tibia (n = 12) with different cortical thicknesses (1 to 8 mm). Screws insertion in polyurethane blocks was assiste...

Feasibility of detecting orthopedic screw overtightening using Acoustic Emission

A preliminary study of Acoustic Emission during orthopaedic screw fixation was performed using polyurethane foam as the bone-simulating material. Three sets of screws, a Dynamic Hip Screw, a small fragment screw and a large fragment screw were investigated, monitoring acoustic emission activity during the screw tightening. Some specimens were overtightened on purpose to investigate the possibil...

Micro-CT imaging of surgical screw tightening in human trabecular bone

Aims Bone fracture fixation in orthopaedic surgery occurs with the use of implants, such as bone screws. Screws are tightened, typically manually, with the level of tightening depending on surgeons’ manual feel. However, this subjective insertion torque control can lead to overtighening and screw stripping 1 . Previously our group has shown that stripping torque can be predicted based on the to...

Analysis of Locking Self-Taping Bone Screws for Angularly Stable Plates

Paper focuses on biomechanics, specifically on locking cortical bone screws in angularly stable plates used for the treatment of bone fractures in the medical fields of traumatology and orthopaedics. During extraction of titanium-alloy implants, problems are encountered in an effort to loosen some locking bone screws from the locking holes of an angularly stable plate and the subsequent strippi...
